RMA & ERisk to Present Enterprise-Wide Risk Management Workshop

RMA-The Risk Management Association and ERisk will present a two-part leadership and management-training event for senior executives with responsibility for risk and capital management strategies. The workshop will take place in Atlanta and Phoenix in 2003.

Philadelphia, Pa. (December 2, 2002)—RMA-The Risk Management Association, in alliance with ERisk, will present a two-part leadership and management-training event for senior executives with responsibility for risk and capital management strategy at regional banks.

Participants can select from one of two workshop starting dates: January 23-24, 2003, in Atlanta, Georgia, at the Atlanta Hyatt Regency Downtown, or February 20-21, 2003, in Phoenix, Arizona, at the Pointe South Mountain Resort. Each workshop group will reconvene for part two of the workshop at the same location in Atlanta on April 24-25, 2003, and in Phoenix on June 19-20, 2003.

Participants will learn how to implement enterprise risk management within their institutions and how to manage the related economic capital models. They also will learn how to use those skills in strategic decision-making and regulatory compliance.

"In implementing enterprise risk management, regional banks confront issues that are unique to banks of that size," said Mark Zmiewski, RMA director of information products. "This workshop presents lessons learned by the early adopters of enterprise risk management, and it demonstrates practical ways that regional banks can overcome critical data and other resource issues. The workshop provides participants with the skills necessary to roll out the fundamental aspects of an enterprise-wide risk management solution successfully across a diverse and complex organization."

The workshop includes round table discussions and case study exercises that explore the practical aspects of executing enterprise-risk management initiatives. It will be led by industry thought leaders with extensive implementation expertise:

  • Kerry Williams, president of ERisk, who was the senior manager responsible for the commercial card division of Bank of America. He built it into a multi-billion-dollar business from 1995 to 1998.
  • Peter Nakada, head of global consulting at ERisk, who has extensive experience in risk management, both as a practitioner and a consultant to financial services clients in North America, Europe, and emerging markets.
  • John Kapitan, vice president of bank consulting at ERisk, who has extensive experience managing a number of strategic management engagements in North America, Europe, and Australia.

"We're very excited about sharing our expertise with regional bankers at this one-of-a-kind enterprise risk management event," said Kerry Williams, president of ERisk and one of the workshop leaders. "The workshop program is designed to provide a pragmatic approach to enterprise-wide risk management and help guide bankers through the often arduous task of integrating capital management into the banks strategic decision-making processes. Participants will learn how to customize a proven enterprise-wide risk management framework to their organization and manage the project to maximize their chances for success."

The workshop format will present participants with an experience that combines education and peer-sharing opportunities. It is designed to encourage participants to begin using what they learned in part one before returning for part two. In this way, experiences can be shared and strategies refined to ensure early implementation yields early successes.
